Dunia Data Platform

About Dunia Data Platform

In the dynamic landscape of Earth Observation (EO), a transformative initiative called Dunia is taking root. Spearheaded by a consortium of leading organizations, including the European Space Agency (ESA) and GeoVille, Dunia aims to revolutionize how we access and leverage Copernicus data across the African continent.

Genesis and Purpose: A Collaborative Vision

Originating from the ESA Dunia EO Africa kick-off event on July 12th, GeoVille and partners initiated a collective effort to elevate Copernicus data usage in Africa. The goal is clear:

Kick-Off of the DUNIA Project - Copernicus Data Access and Exploitation for Africa

On 12 July, the ESA Dunia EO Africa KO event took place with GeoVille as the prime contractor. Their team and partners are working on a Services that will enhance the usage of Copernicus data in Africa. They plan to provide innovative technology solutions that will improve EO data accessibility and exploitation in Africa by leapfrogging infrastructure bottlenecks. They also plan to support the direct interpretation of Copernicus data and develop solutions with low bandwidth consumption and an interface suitable for hand-held mobile devices.

The potential benefits of Earth Observation in supporting sustainable developments in Africa are well recognized. According to Dr. Tidiane Ouattara, on behalf of the African Union Commission, Earth Observation and the monitoring of Africa’s abundant natural resources are important for conserving the welfare of current and future generations.

However, Africa remains the lowest user of Copernicus Sentinels data from the ESA dissemination systems at the continental level. To change this reality, Dunia plans to provide users with an application hub, datasets over Africa, user support, and front-end after three months from now.

DUNIA: A Platform Designed to Support African Access to and Use of Copernicus Data

Dunia is an all-in-one, easy-to-use platform for processing and disseminating Earth Observation data over Africa, that even works on mobile and low bandwidth. Freely discover, build, exchange

At the margin of the 1st G&A forum for phase 2, the DUNIA program manager (GeoVille) organized a meeting with the G&A program team and the heads of a number of G&A consortia, to find out their needs and present what DUNIA can offer. ESA and EUC DG INTPA also took part in the meeting.

An initiative of ESA, Dunia provides an innovative technology solution, that improves EO data accessibility and exploitation in Africa by leapfrogging infrastructure bottlenecks. Supporting the direct interpretation of Copernicus data, providing a low bandwidth consumption solution and an interface suitable for hand-held mobile devices.

The motto of the platform is Discover, Build, Exchange.

To Discover, the platform offers carefully curated datasets, which are both user-friendly and brimming with potential, making them the perfect spark for your next project. With easy search, filtering, and download options, you have all the tools at your fingertips.
  • Administrative boundaries
  • Settlement maps
  • Surface water
  • Elevation data
  • Sentinel-1&2, 3, 5P, Envisat, SMOS, Landsat-5, 7, 8, Copernicus DEM 30m, Administrative boundaries, Geo Boundaries
In addition, the Dunia Wiki is the go-to source for everything you need to know about our platform. It’s the knowledgebase where you’ll find tutorials, quick starts, and reference materials covering the ins and outs of the EO Africa Dunia service.

To Build, the platform offers 2 features
  • The DUNIA Sandbox is a ready-to-use R&D, development, and service deployment platform that you can access directly from your browser. Whatever you’re thinking of developing with our free earth observation data, you’ll find the tools you need here, in your own dedicated virtual environment.
  • The DUNIA Application Hub is an environment that brings together, at the ease of your web browser, the processing power of EO processing toolboxes like SNAP and Orfeo Toolbox with the free earth observation data, in your own dedicated private workspace.

To Exchange, one single feature stands out: The Soko Marketplace, which will go live in January 2024. This will be a “place” dedicated to the discovery of applications and data created by other users. If you’ve created something yourself, and want to advertise it – and even get paid when someone else uses it – check out this feature. GMES-supported consortia, now’s the time to promote your dedicated applications.

Last but not least,
  • Newcomers can benefit of online training programs and comprehensive tutorials available on the platform, tailored just for them.
  • Early adopters of the Dunia community will receive 450 hours of processing time, 50 GB of private storage and unlimited downloads of Earth Observation (EO) Data.

A data platform for Africa: discover Dunia

Together with our partners, we launched a new service for African data users of Copernicus Sentinels data—to enable fast Earth observation data access for everyone, anywhere and at any time.Dunia is being developed in partnership by a group of leading organisations, each with a proven track record of excellence in the field of Earth Observation, with GeoVille leading the consortium.

Dunia is an all-in-one, easy-to-use data processing and dissemination platform that also works on smartphones. By providing access to Copernicus Sentinels data in formats and protocols adapted to low bandwidth and fast data processing, the Dunia service will help improve data accessibility and use, facilitating the development and operation of applications over Africa.

Users can choose from a wide range of African Earth Observation (EO) products and Copernicus satellite missions, and search, filter and view the data of their choice. Thanks to innovative solutions, they can obtain the datasets they want to analyse locally without worrying about bandwidth or endless download times. Thoughtfully selected datasets empower users to conduct a wide array of analyses, encompassing administrative boundaries, digital elevation models, and the complete Copernicus Sentinels catalog. Users have the capability to create and disseminate information about their solutions, fostering a sense of community through the sharing of data and applications with others. Dunia provides cloud development environments, equipped with popular and powerful data processing tools like JuypterLab and QGIS. Early adopters enjoy benefits like 450 hours of included processing, 50 GB of private storage, and unlimited downloads of Earth Observation (EO) data. Additionally, there’s a dedicated live online training program with comprehensive tutorials tailored for first-time users, aimed at reducing access barriers.
